Protein is the building block of muscle cells.
When you stress your muscles through serious exercise, it takes protein
to rebuild them. So what you want is protein that is highly bio-available
for the task.
Pure whey protein isolate (WPI) has an extremely
high bio-availabilty and is extemely low fat - about 1% - and low lactose
- under 3%. Most whey proteins you buy in the store are blended with whey
protein concentrate (WPC). WPC can contain anywhere from 30% to 85% bio-available
protein, may have up to 5% fat and also has more lactose than WPI. Not
surprisingly, concentrate is cheaper. Both types of whey protein peak
in your system in about 90 minutes, but isolate is absorbed more quickly.
That, plus it's higher protein value, makes it superior as part of an
effective post-workout drink.
Look for whey protein isolate created using
microfiltration - a technique that keeps the protein's peptides completely
intact and solubility high while removing unwanted components from the
whey. Also look for "instantized" products. They are made for
easy blending with a spoon or in a shaker.
