Maltodextrin is a flavorless complex carbohydrate
usually derived from corn starch. It is also called "modified corn
starch" or "glucose polymers". Maltodextrin may also made
from potatoes, rice, or other starchy sources. All nutrients (proteins
and lipids, in addition to carbohydrates) ultimately are delivered to
your muscles as glucose.
Carbohydrates are the body's first resource
for energy. Even though it is a complex carbohydrate, it is digested faster
than other complex carbohydrates from unprocessed foods such as whole
grains, but not as fast as simple sugars. Therefore, it produces sustained
energy and replenishes glycogen you use up during training. It can
be mixed with protein powder.
Each gram of maltodextrin converts to approximately
4 calories. Most weight gain mixes contain significant amounts of maltodextrin.
Its other uses are as a texturizer and bulking agent in foods and to improve
the flow characteristics and the feel of liquids in the mouth without
increasing sweetness.
